While my interests in mathematics only go so far as logic in a philosophical sense, Ramanujan lived and breathed maths. Russell is known as one of the founders of analytic philosophy, though he did studies and wrote about nearly every type of Philosophy there is. It’s probably my philosophy-geek side emerging for that one. It’s possibly sad that my favourite character was actually Bertrand Russell (played by Jeremy Northam) who was a philosopher in the 1900s (died in 1970), and he wasn’t even really a main character at all. but I did a Philosophy degree, so watch a film that is set in one of England’s most respected colleges was incredibly enjoyable. I’m no mathematician (can’t even work out percentage discounts when I’m shopping). And the fact that it’s all based on real life events is even more amazing.

The movie is based on the book The Man Who Knew Infinity: A life of the Genius Ramanujan, by Robert Kanigel, I love stories like this, ones that really do show that great things can come from ordinary people. It’s amazing to think that this film is based on real events. He’s always going to give an amazing performance, and this was no exception. How great is Dev Patel? You may recognise him from movies such as Slumdog Millionaire, or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. He does a superb job as Ramanujan in this movie, depicting the excitement and the genius that the character has, and also the emotional pain of leaving his wife and his country.
There’s a clash of not only culture but of personality, and of faith.īy the time WW1 breaks out, Ramanujan and Hardy are slowly getting there, but when sickness hits, who knows if their greatest achievements will ever be published or proved? Thoughts Hardy just wants the proof that the theories work. Where Ramanujan (Dev Patel) has the equations and the passion to work on others, Dr. Hardy doesn’t believe in anything he can’t prove, but Ramanujan’s ideas and equations come to him, as he claims, by god. Well, that’s what they want him to do anyway. There he works among the world’s greatest minds in the world, working on proving various mathematical theories and myths.
Leaving his mother and new wife behind, he takes the boat to England, where he meets Dr. Spending days on end scribbling mathematical equations and calculations on the temple floor in Madras, one day he gets the opportunity to travel to England, to Trinity College, Cambridge.
I’m not really one to go and see dramas at the cinema – I’m all for action, sci-fi, fantasy and chick flicks at the movies, preferring to watch dramas at home – but when a friend asked if I wanted to go, we headed along with the 6 other people who were in the theatre that day.
